Edinburgh Academicals beat Liverpool 2-0

Saturday, January 8 – 1876
A football match between the Edinburgh Academicals and the Liverpool Club was played at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon. The weather was very unfavourable, there being a cold wind and a slight fall of snow during the whole of the time.

The ball was first kicked off by the Liverpool goal, but after a sharp tussle, it was returned, and a magnificent goal made for the Scotch by Mr. N. Finlay.

In the contest for the second goal, which was also won by Scotland, Mr. G. Coupar, of the Scotch team received a severe injury to his face, and was forced to retire; and Mr. Hull, of the Liverpool Club sprained his ankle badly, and had to leave the field. When time was called the Academicals were the victors by two goals; not a single goal was made by their opponents.
