Nantwich v Liverpool

October 17, 1892
Liverpool came through the first stage of the English cup very satisfactory on Saturday last. They were without Jock Smith, whose ankle is far from being well, but included a new half-back – John McCartney, of St. Mirren.

At Nantwich, in wet weather, before a poor gate. Liverpool, in the first half, played a better game than their opponents, but gained no points. On the re-start Nantwich livened up somewhat, and for a time the game was equal. Liverpool again assumed the aggressive, and scored two goals in a very short time after each other.

Final result – Liverpool 3 goals; Nantwich, nil.

** Note that Mercury wrote the final score to be 3-0. The correct score was of course 4-0.
