The Everton club and their late trainer

September 21, 1893
The directors of the Everton Club have arranged a match to be played this evening at Goodison Park, kick-off at 5:15, between teams composed f their own players or the benefit of the widow of their late groundsman (George Howard). Two equal sides will be chosen, and as the game will thus take the form of a genuine trial test, it will be certain to be carried out with zest. It will be remembered that Howard committed suicide a few weeks ago in a fit of temporary insanity, leaving a large family unprovided for. The case is a very sad one and appeals especially to followers of Everton to assist those so suddenly deprived of means of support.

  1. On Saturday 29th September 1888, Clapton Football Club played it’s first ever match as tenants of the Old Spotted Dog ground. Their opponents were Old Carthusians, an experienced team made up from the old boys of Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey.

    1. Hi Andrew,

Thanks for that. I do not live far away from Godalming, and I understand it is quite some football history around the Surrey/Hampshire area.

      Regards,

      Kjell
