The goal: 1-0 Brown.
The Anfield club having arranged fixtures with the late first-league club, the initial meeting took place at Accrington ground yesterday under most miserable climatic conditions. The morning had been exceptionally fine, but just prior to the game the weather took a complete change, and a worse day it would almost impossible to conceive. Rain fell in torrents and a gale of wind blew from goal to goal.
The home team won the toss, and of course chose the undoubted assistance of the elements. Liverpool started in nice style, and for the first few minutes had all the best of the game; but eventually the home team bore down upon McOwen’s citadel, and Hannah, McLean, and McBride had an exceedingly hot time of it; but so satisfactory was their work that a long time elapsed before a breach was effected, Brown being the lucky individual.
This was the only score obtained up to half-time, and when the game re-opened the home team exhibited an aggressive front, but were sent to the rightabout by Hannah and McLean, and then Liverpool had a lengthened innings, in which Bradshaw ought to have equalised when but two yards from the goal, but instead of which he put the ball high over the ball.
After this the visitors were given two fruitless corners, but Hannah, who was playing a great game, defended splendidly, and put his side on the attack again, which they maintained with great vigour till the referee ordered the game to be abandoned, owing to the terrible weather, leaving Accrington with 1 goal to Liverpool nil.
