April 10, 1897
Walsall Town Swifts v Liverpool 0-1.
These two clubs, who were elected with Burton Swifts and Burton Wanderers to contest for the Bass Charity Cup, played off their tie on Wednesday evening last. Both teams had pretty strong sides out, but there was only a moderate attendance in consequence of a heavy downpour of rain.
The opening exchanges were in favour of Walsall, but Liverpool quickly asserted their superiority, and from a well-placed corner John McCartney opened the scoring. On resuming Liverpool attacked strongly, Andy McCowie putting in several excellent shots.
Towards the finish Walsall played up much better, shots from Felix Mooney and Daniel Horobin being saved with the greatest difficulty. Liverpool eventually won by 1 goal to 0.
