No help for Sheffield United

March 31, 1898
Considerable satisfaction was felt in Sunderland, yesterday, when it became known that Mr. Nicholas Lane Jackson had declined to grant a loan of some of the Corinthians players to Sheffield United for their remaining League engagements.

Mr. Jackson declined to accede to the request on the ground that he considered it better for the club to win or lose the championship on their merits, and with their own players instead of with the assistance of outsiders.

Nicholas Lane Jackson “N.L. Jackson”, Corinthians (Exeter and Plymouth Gazette: November 20, 1894):

Sunderland will have their best possible team, excepting that Robert McNeil will appear instead of Phil Bach, who is still suffering from injuries sustained in the match with Sheffield United on March 5th.
