Irish team to face England

February 11, 1899
The Selection Committee of the Irish Association met on Saturday night and selected the following eleven to meet England at Sunderland on Saturday: –
Jim Lewis (Glentoran), goal; Jack Pyper (Cliftonville) and Sam Torrans (Linfield), backs; Jack Ponsonby (Distillery), Robert Milne (Linfield), and George McMaster (Glentoran), half-backs); Johnnie “Toby” Mercer (Distillery), Jimmy Campbell (Cliftonville), James Pyper (Cliftonville), John Peden (Distillery), and Joe McAllen (Captain, Linfield), forwards.

There are four changes from the eleven which beat Scotland on Saturday, but it is a good team. They travel via Liverpool on Thursday night, and are due on Friday afternoon at Wearside. I hardly think they can win. A journey like this won’t do them any good, but I hope they will make a good fight of it.
