Ex-Manchester City player George Mann at the Cape

April 18, 1904
A former resident of Manchester now at the Cape sends an interesting letter, from which the following is an excerpt:
“By the way, talking about Manchester City, you would scarcely believe the great excitement aroused here by their marvellous form this season. While on the subject, I am sure all old “Citizens” will be interested to learn that one of their old players, George Mann, to wit, is a member of the Caledonian Club here, and as inside right helped them last year to carry off the League Championship. He used to be one of that very good line of halves who did duty for City in their second League days, viz., George Mann, Tom Chapman, and the late James McBride.

“Another player who turns out now and again for the Peninsula F.C. is C. Stephenson, the old Corinthian and Etonian, who is also a fair cricketer, and has been chosen to represent the Western Province in their match against the Transvaal in the Currie Cup competition.

“Two more notabilities are up at Matjesfontein, viz., Irving Washington and Frank Bedingfield, and I believe the latter will try a little junior football during the coming winter. Both have been making good scores in inter-club cricket.”
