Season preview 1913/14 – Sheffield United (The Athletic News)

Monday, August 25 – 1913
Sheffield United have dispensed with many of last season’s players, and engaged many new ones. What their fortune will be during the coming campaign depends greatly upon how the recruits acquit themselves.

The directors have of course retained enough of the old brigade to form a team, and I do not see why a capable eleven should not be chosen from the following tried players of the past: A.E. Hufton; W. Cook, R. Benson and T. Richardson; W.H. Brelsford, F. Hawley, A. Sturgess; J. Simmons, S.H. Fazackerley, J.E. Kitchen, W. Gillespie, R.E. Evans, J.W. Revill, and A. Pearson. But much is hoped from the new men, and doubtless some of them will make their way to the front.

One of the most notable acquisitions is J. English, the Watford full-back, who can play right or left. He was transferred in the middle of April, but did not play with his new club last season. Another is Walter Davies, a Welsh international forward (centre, or inside left), who left Oldham Athletic for Stockport County last January, and who now comes to Bramall-lane with the glory of 37 goals scored last season illuminating his reputation.

Other players secured late last season and re-engaged are H. Gough, a goalkeeper, from Castleford; T.A. Wood, a full-back, from Tibshelf; Robert Barnshaw, from Hebburn Argyle, centre or right half-back, who had a brief stay with Sheffield Wednesday three seasons ago, but got his knee damaged, and was not retained; Thomas Urwin, of Newburn, a clever right half-back, and H.C. Hibbert, of Rotherham County, another smart half-back, but not too robust.

Moreover, search during the close season for additional strength for the forward line, has resulted in the engagement of Sam Bagnall, of Chesterfield, a speedy outside right and deadly shot, who has been making a name for himself on the running track during the summer, and Harry Hall, a nineteen-year-old centre from Long Easton St. Helens, for whom he scored 30 goals last season. He formerly played for Gainsborough Trinity and Newark.

The names of A. Allford, formerly of Swallow Nest, and F. Cheetham, of Valley-road, two of last season’s promising youngsters, who have been re-engaged, complete the list.

How great are the changes which the Sheffield United directors have made since last season will be seen from the following list of players who have migrated; – Joe Lievesley and Wally Hardinge have gone to Woolwich Arsenal, Joe Mitchell and Robinson to Luton, Joe Smith to South Shields, Albert Trueman to Darlington, Bernard Wilkinson and Firby to Rotherham Town, Duncan Ritchie to Derby County, Mabberley to Third Lanark, Dicky Leafe to West Ham, William Marshall to Silverwood, and Frank Lindley to Newport County.

Whether the United have been quite wise in parting with two such experienced and still good goalkeeper as Lievesley and Mitchell, and trusting their fortunes to Hufton – smart youngster though he be – and an untried recruit in Gough, remains to be seen.

The changes in the half-back line also seem to savour of bold experiment.

Although last season was disappointing from a playing point of view, the Sheffield public supported the United well, and notwithstanding the ill effect which the cricket of the wet summer of 1912 had upon the finances, the position of the club is sufficiently strong to justify the expenditure which is being made for improved accommodation.

The old and decaying woodwork terrace in front of the grand stand has been pulled down, and replaced by concrete, and increases the accommodation by 1,200, while the sixpenny public will find a great “Spion Kop” at the Shoreham-street end terraced in earth-work, which it is the intention later on to also cover with concrete.
