Season preview 1913/14 – Tottenham Hotspur (The Athletic News)

Monday, August 25 – 1913
The storms which threatened the Tottenham Hotspur Club last season have blown over, and Mr. Peter McWilliam has had time to do something. On paper the team will be much stronger than it was a year ago, but I have a fear for the full-back division.

It is pointed out that there are seven full-backs on the books, but though some of them have good reputation, it cannot be said with truth that they played up to them last season. There is, of course, the possibility that they will come nearer to doing themselves justice this time round. The only new full-back is Cartwright, from Chelsea.

To fill the vacancy in goal caused by the departure of Tommy Lunn to Stockport County, King, from Aberdeen, has been secured. He played regularly in Scottish League games with his last club, and will most likely be first choice for the position.

It is no secret that efforts have been made in more than one direction with a view to strengthening the half-back line, Billy Wedlock and others have been negotiated for without result. So that for a s start Weir, Rance, and Grimsdell, the three who played most last season, will likely open as the half-back line.

For a long time I have urged that Robert Steel, who has lost confidence in front of goal, should be brought into the half-back line, and during the private practice games he has been tried at centre half. I understand that he has quite realised expectations. In Steel there is undoubted football skill.

A half-back of whom something is expected is Bowler, from Derby County, who can play in any of the three positions.

The forward line seems likely to be dangerous. In the first place the club should get full value out of Walden, who came from Northampton just before the close of last season.

For the centre forward position there is Cantrell, fit and well, and with the effects of his operation completely gone. As a reserve centre-forward Fleming has been secured from Newcastle. He is a player of whom Mr. McWilliam has high hopes.

Bauchop, an inside left from Derby County, is considered as the catch of the close season, and, along with Middlemiss, should complete an effective forward line, if only the half-backs will give them the sort of passes they require. Heggarty, from Stoke, and a player who earlier appeared for Belfast Distillery, will be understudy to Middlemiss.

Of the players on last season’s list who have not been retained one misses the name of Tom Morris. For fourteen years he has been with the ‘Spurs, but time brings its changes, and Morris is now going into business. This marks the snapping of the last link with the team which won the Cup in 1901.

Some people are of opinion that mistakes have been made in allowing two extreme wing men in Jack Curtis and Solomon Upton to depart. They have gone to Fulham and Portsmouth respectively. Chris Young, the centre-forward, has fixed up with Burslem; Milne has returned to Arbroath, and there is no news of Gordon Jones being signed.

In addition to the list of professionals given below, the following amateurs have promised to assist when required: – F.G. Pricker, outside right; J. Oliver and S.R. Crowl, outside lefts; G. Coomber, centre half; S.F. Kennerley and R.J. Page, full backs.

A promising inside left in M. Lane, from Rotherham, has also signed amateur forms.
