Season preview 1913/14 – West Bromwich Albion (The Athletic News)

Monday, August 25 – 1913
West Bromwich Albion retain their reputation for having a local side. The most important addition to their ranks is a local product, for A. Lewis, the inside left, who comes to them from Northampton, was born at Wolverhampton, and learned some of his football with the Albion after a brief spell with Stafford Rangers.

Bentley, who has been acquired from Bolton Wanderers, is a Midlander, for he hails from Alfreton, in Derbyshire, having played for Derby County when that club were among the Albion’s strongest rivals for promotion to Division 1.

The Albion have retained most of their old players, the notable exceptions being Bob Pailor and Sid Bowser, whose places Bentley and Lewis are destined to fill. Bowser, it will be remembered, has joined Belfast Distillery.

Towards the end of last season the Albion were on the look-out for useful young players, and they believe they have obtained a good defender in Shore, from the Birmingham League team, Willenhall Swifts, the winners of the Key’s Cup.

The Albion are well off for centre forwards, for in addition to Newall and Jackson, two local youths who were showing exceptional form at the end of last season, they have signed n Swift, of West Hartlepool, and Riddle, of Burradon, two likely men, who come from a locality which has produced footballers freely, and has indeed supplied a number of League team with players who have done credit to their early training.

The Albion have 33 players signed in, and they should have no difficulty in finding a serviceable team. The difficulty will be to know whom to include. Jesse Pennington, the hero of many International battles, will again captain the side. He is one of four backs who have proved their ability.

Half-backs are plentiful and there should be a fair amount of competition for places. In addition to Baddeley, Buck, McNeal, and Waterhouse, they have several promising players, noteworthy among who is Deacey, who specially distinguished himself with the reserve team last season, and helped them to win the Birmingham League Championship.

Then among the forwards, while Jephcott, Shearman, Wright, Lloyd, and Morris are retained, there are for the wing positions several men who have proved their ability. Gregory is clever at times, and proved a fairly good deputy last season, and, though small, Mann has caught the public eye in the practice matches, and seems well fitted to aspire to a place in the second eleven.

The Albion are hopeful.

They have not tried to get many men with big names from elsewhere; they prefer to develop local talent. They start the season happy in possession of the freehold of their own ground, and they propose to steadily make improvements as their funds permit. They do not intend to rush these matters.
