A footballers’ battalion?

August 31, 1914
The council of the English Football Association will to-night meet Mr. Frederick Charrington, who has suggested the formation of “Footballers’ Battalions,” and that football grounds shall be transformed into drilling and recruiting centres.

Mr. Charrington urges that the 7,000 trained athletes in the service of the football clubs should be released from their agreements and be permitted to enlist, and adds the belief tha if this were done the example of the players would be followed by many thousands of their admirers.
