Footballers successes in military sports

Corporal Tommy Rodway, Preston North End’s veteran full back, won several events at the sports held under the auspices of the 11th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Private Holden (Preston) and Private Stirzaker (Chorley) tied for the championship, and each received a medal.

Rodway ran Private Joe Smith, the Bolton footballer, very close in the bombing competition. Then he gained third place in the hop, stride, and jump event, and followed by winning the kicking the football contest, in which Lance-Corporal Albert Shepherd, of Bolton, came second.

Rodway also won the mop-fighting competition.
