Ashcroft gets another chance

Wednesday, September 20 – 1916
It is worthy of note that last week in the Anfield attendance of 15,295 spectators there were nearly 3,000 soldiers – 1,304 wounded soldiers and 1,386 Tommies. All these men were admitted free, of course. Liverpool, in view of the clever game played by Ashcroft at Burslem, have decided to give the Little Sutton player another run as Cunliffe’s partner.

Lewis, mind, isn’t dropped; he has football in him, that’s certain – but Ashcroft merits another game after his “live” display against Port Vale. Lucas also returns to the team, which reads: –

Ted Taylor, Ephraim Longworth, Tommy Lucas, John Bamber, Walter Wadsworth, Donald Mackinlay, Ernest Pinkney, Arthur Metcalf, Fred Pagnam, Ashcroft, Tommy Cunliffe.
