Alf West is home from the front

Thursday, November 23 – 1916
A big surprise came upon me when I learnt that Alf West, the former Barnsley, Liverpool, and Nottingham half back, was home from the front. He has been in Paisley for a time with wounds in the leg, but is now all right. What a curiously “curbed” career he has had! He was once accidentally shot, and his knee troubles have a lasting memento in that a cartilage was handed to him as a keepsake after he had an operation on the knee.
