Connell, he is playing for Richmond, was the “unknown player” in the Liverpool v. Burslem match, on Christmas Day. He has played goal for Richmond ever since they got the team together two seasons ago.
(Liverpool Echo, 18-01-1917)
Note: This is kind of mystery note. Liverpool used a reserve goalkeeper named Connell during the world war 1. He was the son of the trainer, William Connell, the son also named William (Billy). The mystery is that Liverpool played Everton on Christmas day 1916. On the other hand they played Burslem Port Vale on December 23, 1916. All records show that Kenneth Campbell played this match. No match report has been found, and with this note I have changed the goalkeeper from Campbell to Connell for the Burslem match.
