Private J.H. Bird, one of a well-known family of Hoylake sports, is as West Hartlepool. He writes to say there are “quite a few notables here, including Joe Butler, who assisted Liverpool last season a little, and Ernie Parr (lance corporal), the pro. from Prenton. We had a rather nice walk over the golf links on Sunday and discussed the formation of the different holes, and finally decided it was a good links, but not quite so good as the Royal Liverpool. If we can find the time we are going to see whether we have lost all our golfing knowledge or not. If you have any footballs, boxing-gloves, or anything in the athletic line we should be extremely grateful to you.”
