Trial-match with plenty of talent

August 22, 1918
There are some who fancy Liverpool F.C. will stay the course better this season than last, when they aggravatingly lost the championship to Stoke by a mere breath. At any rate, the team sheets issued to-day show what resources – and luck? – the club has had in retaining its members.

There is hardly a vacancy in either side, and the appearance of Harry Wadsworth in his brother’s side makes for strength if not height, for Waine, plucky as he was, never quite touched the form of consistency. A big crowd at Anfield will show interest in the game, the club, and the welfare of the Footballers’ War Fund.

Teams: – Reds: Billy Connell; Ephraim Longworth, Billy Jenkinson; John Bamber, Walter Wadsworth, Donald Mackinlay; Harold Wadsworth, Arthur Metcalf, Tommy Bennett, Harry Lewis, and George Schofield.
Stripes: Bickerstaffe; Hewitt, Jimmy Stansfield; Roberts, Alex Robertson, Hughes; Thomas Green, Ben Cross, Hale, Dick Birchall, Reg Phillips.
Referee, Mr. J. Cahill; linesmen, Messrs. Lowe and Ridgeway.
