The lie of the tie goalposts

“I find that standing parallel to some goalposts – looking end-on, as the bowlers call it – the posts lie back a little. Referees and linesmen seem to take great care of the back-netting, which by the way, is rarely the cause of any alteration or trouble; yet I do not remember seeing one official test the correctness of the touch-line or test the “lie-back” of the goalposts.” – Ephraim Longworth, Liverpool’s full-back.
