Season preview 1922-23: Bolton Wanderers F.C. (Athletic News)

August 21 – 1922
Bolton Wanderers are looking forward to the season with equanimity. It is believed that the only unsatisfactory department of the side – full back – has been strengthened, though the recruits have yet to prove their mettle in the highest class of football.

For practice purposes the club have levelled up what is known as the old tar works behind the old stand, and there the players will take their lessons in shooting and dribbling. In one of the preparatory games Buchan had the misfortune to break his wrist in a collision.

Of the quartet of new full-backs – and by the way Robert Hawarth, the recognised first claim man, was a junior prior to last season – Alexander Finney, of South Liverpool, has created a capital impression by his steadiness, as he had done in the Lancashire Junior Cup final last season. Thirkell, of Jarrow, is of good length; and Bibby, from Atherton, plays a nice, cool game. The only new defender who has experience of League football is Johnson, a Scotsman, who for the last two seasons has been with Sunderland. There are also two of last year’s defenders, Chambers and Keetley, who are desirous of forcing their way into the League side.

The only additions to the half-back line are two young men of little experience – Nelson Howarth, a Manchester Amateur League player from Urmston, who is trimly built, and has a fine knowledge of the game, and Newnes, a Welshman, who last season was with Whitechurch.

The new man from whom most is expected is Charles Flood, an inside left, who scored 17 goals for Hull City last season. He might be utilised in any of the three inside positions, but last season’s forward line can hardly be disturbed at the outset.

Two local forwards (both from Little Lever) are Farrington, an outside right, who had a little experience with Accrington Stanley, and John Lomax, who was a scoring centre-forward for Lancaster last season. Incidentally, the latter was fined £10 by the FA for signing a professional form within 12 months of his being reinstated as an amateur.

Of last season’s players who are not now with the club. Andrew Watson is with Bradford City, James Jones with New Brighton, Steve Wright and James Mills with Norwich City, and the intentions of two other full backs – John Elvey and James Hodson – are not at present know.
