Fred Wheldon, whose death took place last week, was one of the best inside-left players of his day. The old Small Heath attack of Jack Hallam, Billy Walton, Frank Mobley, Fred Wheldon and Tommy Hands was a fine combination. Ultimately Wheldon found his way to Aston Villa and gained international honours. He was also a member of the Worcestershire County Cricket team, and it was the clashing of interests that caused his severance with the Villa club.
