Season preview 1927/28 – Airdrieonians F.C. (The Athletic News)

Monday, August 1 – 1927
The big event of the close season at Broomfield Park has been the departure of Jock Ewart to Bradford City. The transfer was not altogether unexpected. His cheery personality will be missed from the dressing-room. No other departures of note are announced, and the only new signings are two or three juniors who, it is hoped, will be able to play their part in the League team when occasion demands.

Twenty players are on the books. Currie, last season’s reserve goalkeeper, will take up Ewart’s position in the first eleven. He is a clever young ‘keeper. The regular full backs are likely to be Crapnell and McQueen. Crapnell is a most promising young player, and McQueen, now fully recovered from the bad injury which kept him idle for many weeks last season, is still one of the best left backs in Scottish football.

Preston, McDougall, and Bennie will most probably constitute the half-back line. Men of ripe experience, they have in the past helped Airdrie to win many stern battles. The forward line selection is more doubtful. Trial games will possibly aid the directors to hit upon a final choice. Only Somerville is left of the famous James Reid, Tony Weldon, Hugh Gallacher, Robert McPhail, and Somerville attack.
