Season preview 1927-28: Celtic F.C. (The Athletic News)

August 1, 1927
Celtic, the Scottish Cup holders, will be just as they were. Probably the same team that played most of last season will play in the opening match against Hbernian. James McGrory has fully recovered from the injury sustained against Falkirk which kept him out of the game during the closing weeks of last season, and is reported to be perfectly fit.

The two new players are from the junior ranks, and one, David Nicol, a goalkeeper from Maryhill Hibs, has been signed only on a provisional form, which means that he may be permitted to play with his junior club until Celtic require him. The other is J. Cunningham, a centre half, from Cambuslang Rangers. He did very well as a junior.

There has been only one departure of note from Celtic Park. Peter Shevlin was granted a free transfer, and is now with South Shields. W. Phillips, outside right, and John McArdle, left wing forward, are others who have gone with free transfers.

W. McStay will again captain the team – the same side that on numerous occasions last season flattered only to deceive – J. Thomson, W. McStay, Hilley, Wilson, J. McStay, McFarlane, Connolly, A. Thomson, McGrory, McInally, and McLean.
