Season preview 1927-28: Partick Thistle F.C. (The Athletic News)

August 1, 1927
Partick Thistle, having transferred James Gibson to Aston Villa, will not be so strong at half-back in the new season. Even the return of Alec Lambie, restored to a plenary measure of health, will not fully compensate for the departure of Gibson.

The list of players is not impressive. The side will probably be good enough to keep the club out of the relegation zone, but it certainly will not carry the Firhill company into the realms of championships.

McKendrick, a full back, has not been re-signed, and his is the only name on the Thistle’s transfer list. James Kinloch, up to the time of writing, had not accepted terms for a re-engagement. It will not be a surprise if the ex-Queen’s Park lad decides to give up the game and devote his whole time to his business.

There has been no new signings of importance, only those of one or two new juniors.

Considerable ground improvements have been carried out during the summer. The old stand has been demolished, and in its place a handsome structure, up to date in everything, now appears. Firhill is now one of the neatest and most compact grounds in the country.

When Thistle’s team lines up for the first League game v Queen’s Park at Firhill the side will be pretty much of these lines: – Jackson, O’Hare, Calderwood, Richmond, Lambue, E. McLeod, Ness, Grove, Hair, Fraser, Torbet or Salisbury.
