Season preview 1928-29: Liverpool F.C. (Athletic News)

August 20, 1928
There have been some rather sweeping changes at Anfield, where the weeding-out process has never before been on such an extensive scale.

The services of over a dozen players have been dispensed with, the most notable being the two half-backs, John McNab and William Cockburn, who have gone to Queens Park Rangers, Danny Shone to West Ham United, George Pither and John Miller to Crewe Alexandra, Jimmy Walsh to Hull City, David McMullan to USA, Richard Gallyer to Rotherham, Tom Devlin to Swindon, and John Jones New Brighton, Cyril Oxley, the former Chesterfield player, being still unsigned.

The most prominent additions to the playing strengths are A.J. Whitehurst, who was Rochdale’s top scorer last season, and who has had experience with Stoke; D. Davidson, a centre half-back from Forfar Athletic, and J. Kelly, a youth of 18 from Coleraine, from whom much is expected. Murray, from Clydebank, and J. McDougall, who were signed late last season, are expected to make their mark.

The covering of Spion Kop has been linked to the two main stands. This gives protection for over 37,000 spectators behind the goal, bringing the total covered accommodation for the ground up to 60,000.

Charlie Wilson, a stalwart of years ago, succeeds William Connell as trainer, and Ephraim Longworth, who has completed 18 years’ playing service with the club, has been appointed coach.
