Big transfer for Smith

Wednesday, September 18 – 1929
Late last evening James Smith, the centre-forward of Ayr United, was transferred to Liverpool. The transfer fee, although not divulged, is stated to be between £5,000 and £6,000.

When Ayr United were in the Second Division of the Scottish League two years ago he scored 66 goals, and has long been regarded as a powerful centre of the dashing type. Many clubs have been negotiating for Smith’s services.
