Thursday, August 3 – 1939
A player for Aston Villa when they were a Sunday School team died on Thursday – William Garton, 78 years old, and a retired schoolmaster. He played for the Villa against Queen’s Park at Aston, and after his playing career was a referee for over forty years. He took part in the last match played in this country with two umpires and a referee in control. From 1895 until two years ago he never missed a Cup final.
