Liverpool’s eleven against Sheffield United

Wednesday, August 23 – 1939
Liverpool meet old rivals in Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, and the team chosen is that which defeated Everton last Saturday. The players are: – Dirk Kemp, Jim Harley, Bernard Ramsden, Matt Busby, Tom Bush, James McInnes, Berry Nieuwenhuys, Phil Taylor, Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer, Herman Van den Berg.

Sheffield United were promoted from the Second Division. The last time they met in a League encounter at Bramall Lane was in 1933-34, a 2-2 draw resulting. At the close of that campaign the United were relegated. Before that meeting, however, the Anfield side had been defeated four times on the run by a goal average of 17-1, and the last time Liverpool overcame their Sheffield rivals in a League game at Sheffield was in 1928-9, when they prevailed by 3-1.

The United are one of the most famous clubs in the League, and have gained all possible honours, having carried off the FA Cup four times and the League championship once.
