Out for “the double”

Friday, December 29 – 1939
Preston North End will be anxious to complete a friendly “double” over Liverpool at Deepdale. The clubs met a couple of weeks at Anfield and North End won by the only goal

Preston, I am assure, were rather flattered by that win, but North end have a splendid home record, and on form should succeed in their effort.

Liverpool are labouring under the handicap of having to take the field without some of their regulars, and constant changes must have the effect of upsetting the combination. Still, the Reds will put up a good fight following their lean Christmas, and may create a surprise.

Liverpool (probable): Arthur Riley, Jack Tennant, Bernard Ramsden, Matt Busby, Fred Rogers, Stan Eastham, Berry Nieuwenhuys, Phil Taylor, Willie Fagan, Len Carney, Herman Van den Berg.
