Clubs have been fixture-making during the past few days and the Football League Management Committee considered the fixture proposals at their meeting today. As I foreshadowed Liverpool will, with League sanction, open the season here with a match at Anfield against Preston North End.
Everton begin the season, as expected, by visiting Manchester City at Maine-road.
I note that Everton have arranged to play Leeds United and Southport, whereas Liverpool have not arranged with these clubs but with Blackburn Rovers and Stockport County.
The local “Derby” games will take place at Christmas, Anfield staging the Christmas Day game – in the morning for certain.
Here are the proposed list:
31-08-1940, Preston North End (h); 07-09-1940, Blackburn Rovers (a); 14-09-1940, Blackburn Rovers (h); 21-09-1940, Preston North End (a); 28-09-1940, Chester (a); 05-10-1940, Chester (h); 12-10-1940, Bury (a); 19-10-1940, Manchester City (h); 26-10-1940, Stockport County (a); 02-11-1940, Stockport County (h); 09-11-1940, Manchester City (a); 16-11-1940, Bury (h); 23-11-1940, Manchester United (h); 30-11-1940, Manchester United (a); 07-12-1940, Tranmere Rovers (a); 14-12-1940, New Brighton (h); 21-12-1940, New Brighton (a); 25-12-1940, Everton (h); 26-12-1940, Everton (a); 28-12-1940, Tranmere Rovers (h).
