Liverpool’s heavy defeat by Blackpool, and Northampton’s victory over Leicester yesterday, has carried the latter into the foremost challenging position to the league leaders, Blackpool. The Town struck a winning vein recently, whereas two successive defeats of the Anfielders has robbed them of their chances of outing Blackpool.
The leaders were in merry mood at Bloomfield Road last night. Their shooting was brilliant, yet the outstanding figure of the match, Stanley Matthews, was the only Blackpool forward not to score. England’s outside right, however, made five of Blackpool’s eight goals, and he was always master of the Liverpool defence.
Liverpool were not as completely outplayed as the score suggests, for they had their chances before Blackpool started their scoring orgy, but once the Seasiders got going they overwhelmed the Liverpool defence. Billy Liddell and Stan Palk were Liverpool’s scorers.
