Diverse interests

October 12, 1943
Football and poetry are ill-mated interests, but perhaps few Liverpool men are as intimately acquainted with both as Mr. William McConnell, a Liverpool Football Club director, who is also well known in city business circles. His knowledge of the poets and their works is extensive, and he has the gift of being able to memorise long passages. Great and lesser poets all come within his ken. His library of poetry were Mr. McConnell’s most cherished possession when he followed the sea over twenty years ago, and so retentive is his memory that it does not appear possible to mention the name of a poet of any repute, an extract of whose work he cannot quote.
