Assizes were first held in Liverpool on August 16, 1835. Two years previously a public meeting sent a petition to the Government pleading that assize cases concerning the city might be tried in Liverpool instead of in Lancaster, nearly 60 miles away.
Other South-west Lancashire towns also petitioned. The first Liverpool Assizes were opened by Chief Baron Abinger and Chief Justice Tindall in the Sessions House, Chapel Street.
