Liverpool in the war years have been forced to travel to Gigg Lane to oppose Bury with some curious teams, but they have always managed to bring home the points. Much will depend on how young Thorpe, the Royal Air Force back who was with Tranmere Rovers, settles down at right back. Billy Liddell cannot play owing to Services duties, and Terry Garner, a young reserves’ winger, will take his place. Bury are not a convincing side and have already lost four of their six home games, claiming only six out of 22 points in all matches. My fancy is Liverpool.
Liverpool: Alf Hobson, Sam Thorpe, Jeff Gulliver, Jimmy McInnes, Laurie Hughes, jack Pilling, Terry Garner, Phil Taylor, Don Welsh, George Paterson, Horace Cumner.
