Matt Busby’s hopes of joining the managerial circle – and the club concerned is, I understand, Ayr United – created quite a sensation in the football world, and the question, naturally, arises: “What is Busby’s position as a Liverpool player?”
I can answer that one. While the Liverpool directors generously granted Busby’s request to be released from his post-war coaching appointment, Liverpool have not sacrified their rights over Busby as a player.
In other words, Busby remains a Liverpool player and cannot play for any other club without the Reds’ permission, his registration as a player not having been cancelled. Liverpool will merely appoint another coach for post-war requirements.
