The unexpected wins matches (by Joe Mercer, Everton)

March 8, 1945
A warning against over-coaching was given by C.S.M.O. Joe Mercer, Everton, Army, and England soccer captain, speaking at a meeting of the international Sports Fellowship, in London.

“We must persevere with the coaching system,” Mercer said, “but we don’t want to over-coach, as I fear has been the case on the Continent. You cannot plan every move in a game. It is the unexpected that wins matches.”

Mercer will be one of the instructors at the FA course for public and secondary school-boys at Stamford Bridge during Easter week. More than 650 applicants have been received for the 50 available places.
