Key note: “Chesterfield sprang a surprise upon Liverpool when they met them at Liverpool on Saturday in the first game of the Third Round of the Cup Competition. If Liverpool had anticipated an easy opposition they were quickly disillusioned, for they found Chesterfield to be bonny cup fighters. The game ended without a goal being scored. Chesterfield put up a magnificent performance and were every bit as good as Liverpool, in fact there were occasions when Chesterfield showed flashes of superiority. They certainly had one of the best of the few scoring chances of the match.” (Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald: April 27, 1945)
