Port Vale yesterday appointed Gordon Hodgson, 41 year-old former English international and Leeds, Aston Villa and Liverpool inside right, as manager in succession to William Frith, who has returned to Coventry as a player.
Hodgson came to England with a South African amateur team in 1924/25, and was signed by Liverpool.
Besides gaining three international caps, he played for Lancashire in county cricket as a fast bowler. He also had a spell as a professional to Forfarshire.
For the last five years he has been coach to Leeds United.
