The friendly rivals

October 11, 1949
The choice by Wales of Cyril Sidlow, Liverpool, as goalkeeper on Saturday against England carries a stage further an old rivalry between two players who are former schoolmates.
Sidlow and Bill Hughes (Blackburn Rovers) went to the same school in Colwyn Bay. Hughes was then playing outside right in the school side.
A year ago, a fortnight after he joined Blackburn from Tottenham, Hughes superseded Sidlow in the Welsh side against England. Later he also played against Ireland and went on the summer Continental tour.
Now Sidlow, who has been with Liverpool nearly four years after a long spell with Wolverhampton, has reversed the position with his friend.
