For to-night’s Central League game at Anfield against Sheffield United Reserves (kick-off: 18:30), the opportunity is being seized of trying out three young half-backs, two of whom are at Anfield on a month’s trial.
These are right half Denis Stacey, aged 19, formerly with Torquay, and 22-year-old centre half Brian Smith, who is over 6ft. and was recommended to Manager Don Welsh by his friend Jimmy Wildgoose, a former manager of Stalybridge Celtic, with which club Smith was previously associated.
William Arthur Dumbell is the former Wigan Athletic lad. McCurley, the new centre forward from Brighton leads the attack. Team:
