Sammy Smyth, the Irish international inside-forward, has decided to resign from football. This was announced yesterday when Liverpool city footballers reported for training.
Smyth, formerly with Wolves and Stoke City, has taken up a business appointment in Belfast. He was retained by Liverpool last season, the club which paid a substantial fee for his services when he joined them from Stoke City two years ago. His decision not to re-sign has caused considerable disappointment in Liverpool football circles.
Smyth will still remain on Liverpool’s retained list and will be unable to play for any other club without Liverpool’s permission or payment of the transfer fee.
Liverpool yesterday signed Fred Berry, a 21 year-old full-back from Worthing.
