Liverpool started for half an hour as though victory would be their portion, but the longer the game went the more ragged and disunited they became. The defence was slow, Underwood might well have saved the goal which gave West Ham the points, and though Payne reduced the Hammers’ lead 14 minutes from the end, Liverpool never made a real fight of it.
