John Warwick, Southbourne F.C.’s 18-year-old goalkeeper, has signed amateur forms for Liverpool. A native of Prinstead, he attracted the attention of several clubs before Liverpool stepped in. Their manager, Mr. Don Welsh, did much to foster talent in Sussex during his spell as manager of Brighton and Hove Albion.
Warwick will not be joining his Merseyside club immediately as he is due to be called up for National Service shortly, during which he hopes to play for Southbourne while on leave. Last season, while assisting Emsworth United Reserves, he had nine penalty kicks to face and saved eight of them!
In paying his first visit to Anfield, he will not be entirely cut off from West Sussex as he will have the companionship of another local product, Alan Arnell, the former Chichester F.C. centre-forward.
