No Anfield surprise

August 17, 1955
There are no surprise in the Liverpool team for the opening match of the season against Nottingham Forest at Nottingham, on Saturday, the side chosen being the same as that which fulfilled the majority of last winter’s engagements.

The return to fitness of Hughes, who missed the final dozen matches last season means that Twentyman returns to left half.

Twentyman is well accustomed to this position, and gave some excellent displays there last season until taking over the pivotal position. He is a strong and accomplished player who can fill any intermediate place satisfactorily.

The outside right berth, shared almost equally last term by Jackson and Jimmy Payne (the former made 23 senior appearances and the latter 17), goes to Jackson, though Payne was the “man in possession” at the end of the season.

Opinions among Liverpool followers are more keenly divided on the respective merits of these two wingers than any other connected with the Anfield composition. The more competition there is for individual places the better fro the club’s point of view, and Jackson will have to put his best foot forward to maintain favour.

The team reads:
Doug Rudham, Ray Lambert, Ronnie Moran, Roy Saunders, Laurie Hughes, Geoff Twentyman, Brian Jackson, Eric Anderson, Billy Liddell, John Evans, Alan A’Court.
