Phil Chisnall transferred to Liverpool

Wednesday, April 15 – 1964
Manchester United swooped into the transfer market yesterday by buying England right winger John Connelly from Burnley for £40,000 and selling young England inside forward Phil Chisnall to Liverpool for £30,000.

Connelly had been Burnley’s star forward since recovering from a winter appendix operation. Fans are certain to protest. But Burnley – paying high wages on moderate gates – are now a sell-to-live club.

The deal should solve a United problem that has existed since Irish right winger Johnny Giles was sold to Leeds at the start of the season. Albert Quixall, Norbert Stiles, and David Herd have all been tried by manager Matt Busby as Giles’s replacement. Connelly, capped 10 times by England as right and left winger, is 26 and played in Burnley’s 1960 championship team and the 1961 Cup Final team.

Chisnall, an Under-23 regular this season although never established in United’s first team, goes to Liverpool as replacement for schemer Jimmy Melia who was sold to Wolves last month.
