Anfield Cup match not all-ticket

January 13, 1970
Liverpool’s fourth round F.A. Cup tie against Wrexham at Anfield on January 24 will not be all-ticket, it was decided to-day. Although a capacity attendance seems certain, admission to some parts of the ground will be by payment at the turnstiles.

Details of ticket arrangements will be given in the Echo to-morrow. All the Liverpool players came through last night’s replay against Coventry without injury. All but two of them had the day off. Emlyn Hughes and Peter Thompson, with Tommy Smith, flew from Speke this morning to link up with the England party in training for to-morrow’s international against Holland at Wembley.

Smith has only had two games in the “A” team since recovering from a knee-operation but has joined the England squad to take part in their preparations.

Medical checks.
In addition, he will have to go through the pre-Mexico medical checks with Sir Alf Ramsey has laid down for his squad. Smith’s team-mates had the checks before the last international against Portugal, but this is the first chance Smith has had to do so.

It is doubtful if Sir Alf will name any of the Liverpool trio in to-morrow’s team. Smith is not yet match fit; Hughes and Thompson have played three games in five days. Of course, omission from games which are only part of England’s build-up to the World Cup in June does not mean that a player is discarded. Sir Alf has emphasised that he is creating a squad – the big thing is to be a member of it.
