Speedy Mac back at the Kop

Wednesday, November 13 – 1974
Terry McDermott walked into Liverpool’s lush reception room at 6.15 last night blinked at the glittering array of trophies, then walked into the boardroom for a £170,000 transfer signing.
The Newcastle and England Under-23 forward completed what Liverpool chairman John Smith described as “The quickest big signing ever – two minutes flat.”
McDermott quipped: “I had to sign as quickly as I could in case Liverpool changed their minds.”
McDermott, Liverpool – born and a supporter since boyhood, a Kopite with Liverpool’s Phil Thompson, was discovered by Bury’s assistant manager Colin McDonald and left Gigg Lane for Newcastle 20 months ago for £25,000.
There he reached Under-23 status, and when asked if his next target was a full England cap, he replied: “No – it is to join Liverpool.”
