Frank McGarvey, the £300,000 Liverpool signing from St Mirren who still awaits his Anfield debut, makes his first full appearance for Scotland today, against world champions Argentina at Hampden.
McGarvey, who appeared as substitute against Northern Ireland last week, gains his chance thanks to the non-arrival of Nottingham Forest’ Scottish trio.
Kenny Burns, John Robertson and Archie Gemmill should have travelled on from Forest’s triumphant homecoming. But they failed to turn up as expected yesterday.
Scotland manager Jock Stein said: “You don’t win European cups every day and it seems Brian Clough failed to impress on the lads that we needed them.”
However Stein has no doubt about McGarvey. “He does not know how to worry,” said the manager, who has also had to name St Mirren defender Iain Munro in a side already badly hit by illness and injury.
