Furious Leeds hit out at the FA last night after being banned from a tour to Italy. Leeds had arranged a three match visit to Genoa before their return to the First Division. Now they insist they have been punished for the reputation of their fans, regarded as the worst behaved in the country.
They still face possible sanctions following last season’s Bournemouth riot.
Leeds chairman Leslie Silver accused the FA of victimisation at a time when other clubs are being allowed to tour abroad. Sheffield Wednesday will take Leeds’ place.
The FA insist on preventing English clubs from visiting continental resorts where English fans may be on holiday and say Wednesday will play 60 miles inland.
But Liverpool, who are still barred from European competition, have been given permission to fly out today for a friendly with Fiorentina.
