Jimmy Harrower transferred to Liverpool

Liverpool F.C. last night signed Jimmy Harrower, a 22-years-old inside forward, from the Edinburgh club, Hibernian, at a fee estimated at around £11,000.

Harrower who has represented the Scottish Under-23 side, has attracted the attention of several English clubs.

Liverpool were first interested in him over a year ago, but Hibernian refused all overtures until chairman Thomas Valentine Williams (T.V. Williams) and director Sidney Cecil Reakes went to Edinburgh yesterdat and persuaded the Easter Road club to part.

Loss of valuable points over the New Year period, which made title hopes very remote meant that Hibs were able to release a player they valued highly.

Like many Scottish players, Harrower feels that a move to English football can do him nothing but good. At Anfield he will link up with a former Hibernian club mate, goalkeeper Tommy Younger.

Harrower’s customary position is inside right, but he has also had experience in three other forward berths since joining Hibs from his home town team Bo’ness in 1955.

He established a regular place in the team last season, and earlier this term he played in the Hibernian side which drew 3-3 in a friendly with Liverpool under the Anfield floodlights.

His display that night heightened the Liverpool club’s interest in him, and the addition of this clever ball-player to the Anfield strength should give hopes of promotion a considerable boost.

The Liverpool front line has been below the standard expected of title contenders in several games this season, and Harrower can be expected to play a large role in remedying this defiency.

If Liverpool win to-day’s Cup-tie with Southend United, Harrower will be eligible to play in the fourth round tie on January 25.

It is likely that he will make his debut in next Saturday’s vital Second Division game with the current leaders Fulham, at Anfield.

Harrower who is 5ft. 9in. tall and weighs over 11st., is due in Liverpool early next week. He is married, and his first child is expected next month.
